Trace In and Trace Out

A new MoneyFlow shows one hop in each direction. The Tracing buttons in the top-right corner extend it one hop at a time.

Select a node, then trace

  1. Click a node in the chart, or a row in the address list, to select it.
  2. Click Trace Out to find where that node sent funds. Click Trace In to find where it received funds from.
  3. Wait while the new hop is computed. The chart redraws with the extra depth level.

If no node is selected the buttons stay inactive. The trace always extends from the selected node, not from the whole chart, so pick the node you want to follow.

Use Trace In when you need the source of funds: who funded this address. Use Trace Out when you need the destination of funds: where the money ended up, for example an exchange deposit address.

Versions

Every trace creates a new version of the MoneyFlow. The badge next to the title shows the version and the depth, for example V2.0 | In:1 – Out:2 after one Trace Out.

Click the badge to open Version history.

Version history of a MoneyFlow

Each entry shows:

  • the version number and whether it is the current version,
  • the tracingID of that computation,
  • what created it, such as Initial data or Tracing outbound 2,
  • the depth after that step,
  • the timestamp.

Each version has its own URL, so you can link to a specific stage of an investigation.

Depth

Depth is measured from the origin. An address at in-1 sent directly to the origin. An address at out-1 received directly from the origin. Each Trace In or Trace Out adds one level on that side.

Tracing amount versus transaction amount

When you trace beyond the first hop, the Tracing Amount of a transfer is the part of that transfer that still belongs to the origin's funds. The Txn Amount is the full size of the on-chain transaction. A large exchange sweep of 59 BTC may carry only 0.003 BTC that came from the origin. See transactions table for the columns.

Tracing method

The summary popup (the i icon in the toolbar) shows the Tracing Method used for the MoneyFlow. For Bitcoin traces this is First-in, First-out. How amounts are attributed on each chain type is explained in Coinpath Explained.
